FAQ
Why choose waxing?
Although waxing is only temporary it removes hair from the root unlike shaving and creams that only remove hair to the skin's surface. This can cause the hair to grow back as rough stubble. Regular waxing treatments can reduce the thickness and density of the hair over a period of time. New hairs will not grow back usually until 2-3 weeks after a waxing treatment. Waxing is suitable for men and women although men can sometimes experience a less comfortable experience with the initial few treatments due to the stronger hairs.
Who/what is waxing not suitable for?
-
Please check your medication carefully for the following:
- Accutane (Acne medication)
- Adapalene (Acne medication)
- Alustra (Retin A)
- Avage (Tazorac – Acne medication)
- Avita (type of Retin A)
- Clindamycin
- Differin (Acne medication)
- Doxycycline
- Erythromycin
- Isotretinoin (like Accutane)
- Madifloxicine
- Metronidazole
- Minocycline
- Renova (Retin A)
- Tazarac (Acne medication)
- Tazarotene (like Tazorac)
- Tetracycline
- Tretinoin (like Retin A)
-
These medications may cause the skin to thin or to be extra sensitive to waxing. Thin, sensitive skin can lift with the wax. If you have taken Accutane within the last year it is not advised to wax for one year after you have stopped taking this medication.
If you are currently using any of the following products, they can cause the skin to be overly sensitive. Please let me know prior to your appointment.
- Other Acne medications not listed above
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic, Lactic)
- Topical Antibiotics
- Retinol
- Salicylic Acid
- Exfoliants/Laser Peels/Microdermabrasion
- Any areas where sunburnt, within 24hrs of a sunbed treatment or straight after fake tanning.
- Some doctors do not recommend waxing for people who suffer from diabetes or who have varicose veins or poor circulation as they are more susceptible to infection and the skin is slower to heal.
- Areas where psoriasis or eczema are a concern
- Moles cannot be waxed over
- Recent scar tissue
- Bruises/cuts/abrasions
- Please also be aware that around the time of your period or just before you will be more sensitive and may feel more discomfort although the treatment can still be done
- If you still aren't sure that you're a suitable candidate for waxing treatments please feel free to enquire
How often will I need to be waxed?
The length of time between waxing treatments varies depending on the individual’s hair growth pattern.
As body hair grows in different stages it is not always possible to remove all the hair evenly as some hair is still below the skin surface. Once the hair is waxed regularly with even spaced appointments it will then stay smoother for longer.
First of all your appointments may need to be 3 weekly, you will soon see the benefits of waxing as the hair growth is slowed down by regular treatments, once the hair growth slows down then every four weeks should do the trick, If you are waxed regularly it is easier for all your hairs to grow at one stage (anagen) which is the best stage for waxing. It will also result in a smoother, longer lasting finish.
Which Wax?
To make it a more pleasant experience for you I offer two different types of wax. Depending on where is being waxed depends on the wax used. For instance, for legs, arms, backs and chests I would use Strip Wax. Strip wax is applied very thinly to the area and then a strip is used to remove it. Hot wax is a much thicker wax used for more sensitive such as bikini lines, face and underarms. The hair in these areas can be much stronger and hot wax is able to grab this stronger hair.
How long does my hair need to be?
Hair needs to be at least 1/4 inch in length. Ideally it will be more than a weeks growth. If it is too long in certain areas you can trim your hair before you appointment or I can trim it for you. If the hair is too short the results won't be as effective please bear this in mind before making your appointment.
